So yeah, the long awaited Paolini Space Opera has yet to see the light of day. He has promised it will be out any minute multiple times and has yet to deliver on that promise in any way, shape, or form ( Read more... )

I think the Space Brick has been rejected at least once by now. It's been seven years since Inheritance came out and Pao used to release a new book about once every two and a half years until that point.

Honestly, I feel pretty bad for him. He still lives with his parents and sister, doesn't he? It must be a ton of pressure to keep up that cushy lifestyle the family's gotten used to. Does anyone else work or is it just Chris?

Pretty scummy of his parents to leech off him like that. It must be tough living isolated from everyone but your immediate family. At age 34.

That's so messed up. It's really no wonder Eragon is a shameless self insert escape character. Chris has never had a moment of freedom from his family cult. I mean, my parents were controlling, but at least I got out when I had the chance...

Fate is a pretty common element of generic fantasy though, right? It feels like kind of a stretch to hang an interpretation of his entire life on it. Maybe just a bit?

Still, that could be misinterpretation on Paolini’s part, or bad execution. He’s not good at writing, which means he’s not good at communicating clearly. It is apparent in many aspects of his material that how it’s received does not match his intent.

I suppose the “he” from my previous comment (which was admittedly an indefinite referent-sorry, it was clearer in my head) wasn’t really Eragon but Paolini himself. I guess I have trouble with the idea that he’s projecting his feelings in this particular manner you’ve described.

I keep coming back to a Harry Potter, whose life is dictated by prophecy and, as you said, stage-managed with long-term manipulations by the authorities in his life, in such a way that the main difference from Eragon is in the quality of the final work. (I’m not trying to equate either the characters or the authors here-this is just the example that keeps sticking in my head)

You're absolutely right about HP.

I think we may have reached the logical endpoint of this discussion. Nice talking with you!
