The Replica, much like Xion, Riku, and other members of the Organization, has the ability to sense Darkness. However, this isn't like how you would normally sense some things, with the mental alarms and the shivers down the back. In fact, the Replica can smell Darkness more than anything else. The more Darkness in a person, the stronger their scent.

Now, the amount of Darkness in a person isn't quite as easy to determine as some people would think. It's not clean-cut.

A person with a Darkness rating of 10 would, in the world of Kingdom Hearts, have completely given themselves up to Darkness. This is the people who have either aspired to commit genocide, destroy and enslave the world or people who have witnessed traumatic events and are haunted by them. For example, Batman, despite his good intentions, would probably have a high Darkness rating. The events with his parents and the guilt and burdens he carries because of it along with the way he goes about apprehending people (aka: the violence he exhibits in many of the comics) would, despite his superhero title, have him rating high in the Darkness rating.

A rating of 5 is for those who are pretty neutral. Basically, these are normal humans. People who are unburdened but not striving to go out and save the world or those who don't have that urge to help and save everyone they come across. Every heart has Darkness and Light in it, except for those that are extremely special cases.

A Darkness rating of 1 or the elusive 0 are those who don't have a single mean bone in their body. Or, if they do, they have some sort of special condition in canon that has them cast into the good, light, or sun category of things. These are the people that can't hate, make friends easily, and have to help just about everyone they come across. Sora, Kairi, Yuna from FFX, and the Disney Princesses are all good examples of beings that have such a low Darkness rating.
