Gam was swooping his way back to the clock tower, when out of nowhere a fog encircled him, and he began falling downward. Then he emerged in that same bloody gray place.
"Hello, gray lady? Got a problem here."
"Boy-Wonder, you don't know the half of it," the gray lady said as she emerged from thin air.
"Well, am I supposed to fight a city full of zombies, or help a group of people fight opression, just let me know?"
The gray lady said nothing.
"Um, gray lady, you know, there's no witty come back tonight about how you're more powerful than I am, everything okay?"
"No Gambit, everything is not okay. Unfortunately, this was not supposed to happen, but someone pushed my hand."
"Who?"
"Well, you."
"Me, I didn't have a damn thing to do with this."
"That is not what I meant, Boy-Wonder, but my true meaning will be illustrated momentarily. Unfortunately pressing matters will expedite your return to your own world."
"That's great!"
"Well, unfortunately, you will have to finish matters in this world first, there are rules to what is happening. Once you've interfered in a world's problems, you must help resolve them."
"Well, zombies is a pretty heavy problem, do you really think I can take a city of zombies on my own?"
"The zombies were not part of my plan, Boy-Wonder, but you are right. I will allow you to recruit help, but I only have enough power for you to bring two with you from your home world... But you'd better find them fast, they are currently in pursuit of the most dangerous creature to set foot in your city."
And then Gam was on top of a building in his old costume.
"Damn I love this costume!" He ran to the edge of a building and leapt off and started swinging into the heart of the city.
"Anyone on?" Gam said into his comlink, built into his mask.
"Who is this?" Dahnianna said back.
"Dahnianna?!? This is Gam."
"You're back? I thought you were dead."
"I tell you what D, the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Where are you?"
"A bunch of us are tailing some guy who just robbed a bank and killed some hostages."
"Where Dahnianna?"
"I think we've got it Gam-"
"I SAID WHERE!"
"Over central park!"
"DO NOT ENGAGE, I REPEAT, DO NOT ENGAGE!"
Gam started swinging towards central park. Gray lady said the most dangerous creature to ever set foot in his city. After losing Faith and Steph, Gam was in no mood to lose another one of his companions. Gam looked down to see Dahnianna running along a rooftop. He swung down and landed in front of her, and she stopped on a dime.
"Good reflexes."
She hugged him.
"What's going on? What are you doing?"
"Right now D, I'm recruiting you. Know where Grig is?"
"No, can't say I do."
"That's okay, he usually has his comlink on him, just seldom on. I can triangulate it."
Just then, Ripper climbed up the fire escape saying, "Dhanianna, you're never going t'believe what Liadan jus told me she jus saw."
The he looked up and saw Gam standing there.
"Zut alors!" Ripper said, falling to his knees, "C'est vrai! You are alive!"
Gam raised an eyebrow, "What are you talking about?"
"Liadan saw you in de park."
"I haven't been in the park."
"Oui?"
And just then, Liadan came flying over the edge of the building, came sliding to a stop right next to Ripper, and said, "That... Was... Not, Gam."
Gam rushed over to her and said while helping her up, "No tiger, it ain't."
"Gambit, you're alive!" she said as she threw her arms around him.
"Yeah I'm getting a lot of that."
Ripper stood up and said, "I hate t'bring de mood down, but what's going on, and what was dat t'ing if not you?"
"I'm not sure Ripper," Gam replied, "But it's not good. Dhanianna, Grigori, and I have to go away for awhile, but this thing is going to try to tear the city apart while we're gone. You have to hold it together while we're gone."
"Will do, mon ami. We will beat it."
"No, do not engage unless absolutely necessary. Just reduce the collateral damage. Try not to let it hurt anyone, but you guys cannot take this thing down."
"Why not?" Liadan asked.
"I wish I knew, Irish, but it's just my gut telling me."
She smiled and said, "You're guts aren't oft wrong are they?"
"No," Gam replied, "They're not. Ripper, send Kyra to my flat. Have her wait there for Kim and Syl, as well as anyone else that they bring. Then have them take the safest route out of the city. Have Kyra taken to Kingston, since she'll know the route. If they can have them get ahold of Autumn. When we get back, I need to know there will be a secondary line of defense if we fail."
"Oui, it will be done."
After quick goodbyes, Gam and D were swinging through the city towards the forest, where they took to foot. They ran through the scret recesses of the forest, which eventually led them right to the door of Otik's tavern. They burst in. As Gam had suspected, Grig was at the bar, luckily, he was in full armor. Otik about dropped another glass, but he juggled and caught it just in time.
"How many times are you going to come back from the dead, boy?" Otik said.
Grigori spun around and said, "Gam, you're back! Let me buy you a drink!"
"No time Grig! We've got to go."
"Go where."
"Back to that other world. Zombies."
Grigs eyes got big, he smiled, and said, "Really?"
"Yeah. Otik, close the bar, get to the city, and go meet your neices. Take them to my flat, and then go with them wherever they go?"
"Gambit," Otik said sternly, "Recently ressurected or not, no one tells me what to do in my bar!"
Gam swallowed hard, "Otik, a lot of people are going to die in my city. The only way they'll leave is if you make them and go with them. If you want them to live, you'll do what I say, and you'll do it right fucking now!"
Otik swallowed harder than Gam did and said, "Everybody out, the bars closed until further notice!"
Grig hopped off the bar stool and stretched. "Let's go"
The three rushed to the door when a guy walked up to Dhanianna and said, "Where you going sugar?"
She turned around and looked at Otik. "You know this guy?"
Otik shook his head.
She knocked the guy out.
The three stepped out of the door, and were swallowed in a cloud of mist, only to emerge in the gray place again, but only momentarily, because they were just as quickly deposited in an intersection of the city. Zombies stopped and turned towards them and began ambling in their direction.
"Alright!" Grigori said with a smile on his face as he took his axe off of his back.
Almost in unison, Gam and D shot grappels into the air and ascended into the sky. Grig didn't even notice.
Then a grappel shot back down, wrapped around his axe and whipped him up into the air. That he did notice.
Gam and D pulled him onto the rooftop just before D said, "Just how much armor do you wear Grig?"
Grig didn't answer, only said, "What are you guys doing, let's crack some skulls!"
"I gotta whole clocktower full of scared people Grig, they come first. We've got to help them survive."
"Okay, good point... But how do we get there?"
Dhanianna tossed him a belt and said, "Built in grappels, I'll show you how to use it."
"No good," Grig replied, "I don't have the balance or flexibility to keep myself steady or from flying into buildings."
"Neither did she at first, Grig," Gam said, "That's where there's built in gyroscopic stabilizers. It's this or fight your way through about a half million zombies."
Halfway to the clocktower, while swinging through the air, Grig shouted out, "I should have taken the zombies!!!"
"You're doing fine Grig," Dhanianna said to him, as she swooped down next to him. They saw Gam land on a rooftop ahead of them, and they followed suit. Even Grig made a good landing. "I hate to be negative," he said, "but you know the scenario. Even if we help these people survive, they'll be living in a world of walking dead."
"Not so," Gam replied, "There's a thirty foot wall surrounding the city... It's a big city too."
"Thirty feet is big," Dhanianna said, "why's it there? To keep people out?"
Gam shook his head. "Actually to keep people in. The regime here in this city was very oppressive. I imagine if people could just leave, they would've done it by now. But whatever reason it was built, it's a blessing now. Means that the world isn't in peril if we can take care of this city."
"Okay," Grig said, "Where's this clocktower?"
"About ten minutes ahead. It's back in the air guys."
Gam and D shot off into the air as Grig walked to the edge of the building.
"Show offs."
And Grig launched a grapel into the skyline and took off after them.
