Teddy's gone

Aug 26, 2009 12:40

Senator Edward Kennedy is dead, and so is his sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver.  The original Camelot is gone, and it cannot be a worse time: health care reform, THE cause of Teddy's life, is teetering on the brink, despite huge Democratic majorities in Congress and a Democratic President of sufficient caliber to get things done.  And then you get this:

After a bipartisan effort at health legislation started running off the rails, Senator Orrin Hatch, Republican of Utah, told The Boston Globe in early July, “If Kennedy had been here, the first thing he would have done is pick up the phone and call people like me and say, ‘Let’s see what we can do.’ ’’ - NY Times

Uh huh.  If only.  Boy, if only.  And what then?  Would Orrin Hatch be convinced?  Does he really need Teddy to do the right thing?  That's disingenuous to the extreme.  Hatch KNOWS what the right thing is, but he'll just filibuster health care because he wants Obama to fail, wants Democrats to lose the 2010 elections and wants to further Republicans' political power, and the little devil on his shoulder is telling him that fucking over millions of suffering sick Americans is the way to go.  (Because of DEFICITS.  Deficits, you see, are okay when we're bombing Iraqis and Afghans, we've got a bottomless pocket for THAT kind of shit.  Curing sick Americans?  Too expensive.)

Oh, if only Teddy were there!  Sorry, Orrin, your crocodile tears convince no one.  You're a liar and a cheat, and the GOP has been systematically purged of anyone and everyone with even a shred of decency.  If Teddy were around, you'd moon him also, just like you and your ilk has mooned us all.  The only way this country will make any progress in any good direction is if (when?) you and your kind are summarily voted out of office, publicly humiliated and gleefully laughed at every time you appear on TV.

Kennedy is irreplaceable.  But maybe his death would finally galvanize Americans into some proper action.  We've been too complacent.  Just because we've got Democrats all over the place doesn't mean anything will happen unless we let them know how badly we want it.  And if we fail to do that, all we'll ever get is war, economic collapse, social injustice and complete disregard of our needs.
