The boss left early today! Considering I am not really able to take a break for the next four hours or so, I figured I would go ahead and slack off for a bit and write the next act...enjoy!
THE SECOND JOB
-or-
EXCUSES, EXCUSES
A Monologue in Three Parts
by Jack Cuellar
PART II: CONTRITION
(JACK walks onstage, still stooped and disheveled, still a 20-something. His glasses are no longer broken, and in fact are a whole new pair, he looks tired, but kind of jazzed. He pulls out another battered pack of Camels and pulls out a smoke (this time it's whole). Lighting the cigarette, he once again addresses the audience.)
JACK:
I smoke a lot more of these now...at least now with the job at the coffee shop I can afford it. I've also have a lot more comic books and records now too. I'm the official art curator for the gallery in the back, and I am an assistant manager, so I get paid an extra dollar an hour. I mean, sure, I have to work twice as much as I did before, and my girlfriend is about move in and I don't know where I am going to find the time to clean up the house beforehand, but still, I think it'll be okay. Until the end of the school year, I am not going to be around much, and this way I can make sure I see her occasionally.
She doesn't seemed too pleased about it though.
Anyway, I better go, I have to be up in 5 hours to go back to work.
(JACK drops the smoke on the ground, crushes it under his foot, turns, and walks off stage, as he’s walking away we notice the that he still has numerous embarrassing holes on the back of his pants, only now they are getting bigger.)
