Do you really? I can kind of guess what some of them might be, but if you don't mind I'd be interested to hear about them.

they're mostly to do with his athletic work ethic, honestly. /sekrit figure skating nerd. :)

oh, ok, that makes sense. "the swan" and "the workhorse" are not interchangeable, heh.

but mostly: yay, another figure skating nerd, yayy! As much as I love Johnny, I do selfishly wish that the currently-burgeoning fandom was more broadly focused and more into the actual skating. I am admittedly very newly initiated (still learning to visually distinguish the different jumps, ahaha /o\), but mannn, I'm getting in deep.

do you have favorite skaters/ice dancers? I'm new enough to more-than-casual interest in the sport to be wary of voicing too many uninformed opinions, but I'm always curious what other people think. :D :D

my favorite skaters are very old. i met kurt browning in 88 when i was just a bb. viktor petrenko was, imho, the greatest figure skater ever.

i think the new scoring system (now 6 years old) is moving the sport in a direction i don't care for. i am the kind of skating fan that modern skating fans dismiss as out of touch - and they are right. :)

to make up for that crank, here is what i love about skating:

i mean, i like all the jumps and shit too? it's very exciting! but this.

that's...pretty amazing, actually. I can see how modern fs wouldn't appeal as much if that's what you originally fell in love with. I mean, I grew up with the 6 point system and have memories of watching the major competitions with my mom, but I wasn't a fan fan. even still, I think I prefer the old system a little, too, if only because the new system seems to encourage "safe" skating, or math over art.

really, though, that Kurt Browning vid is, like, high art. wow. (It's so cool that you met him!)

not just encourage, demand. there's no time to fuck about with presentation and choreography when you have to fit x number of perfectly executed spins and jumps and lifts and whateverthehell in, and you have to pack them as tight as you can or you won't have the points to beat yu-na, you know?
