This week has been made of sucktastic failcakes and I am a mess, so if I didn't comment or did flake out on you, I am very sorry! (Already I feel silly for this, as it suggests that anyone noticed I was gone. Why is there not a Miss Manners for lj?)

Anyway, yes! So, like the enormously well-adjusted individual I am, I spent all my free time not doing things I needed to do, and reading fic instead.

Breaking the laws of classical aerodynamics, by black_eyedgirl
(Gossip Girl, Chuck/Dan + ensemble, PG-13, ~13,000 words)
The sign reads ‘Constance Billard and St Jude’s School for the Gifted’. Dan isn’t feeling particularly gifted today. Fusion with X-Men, i.e. Gossip Girl characters and X-Men setting, no crossover characters. this is Dan pov, and what a wonderful Dan pov it is. it just *feels* like him - to me, Dan is a very comfortable(?) character, and his pov here fits that, as it's very easy to slip into. this story is a fun fusion, yeah, but what makes it good is that the characters don't change as the setting/details do - they are who they are, colored by Dan's lens.

Apples Are Not the Only Fruit, by bexless
(Idol RPS, Kris/Adam, NC-17, ~23,000 words)
Local woman wins pie contest! Adam Lambert assists. An AU. ads;fljkd ADORABLE. sweet and funny and so, so happymaking. adam the hotshot hollywood movie star's car breaks down in arkansas while he's on the post-breakup run from the paparazzi, and kris the substitute teacher/aspiring musician is his knight in shining armor.

The Dah-Ling Store-It-Yourself, by laytoncolt
(Psych, Shawn/Lassiter, PG-13, ~45,000 words)
The bad news is that one of Lassiter's highest profile arrests has just escaped from prison. The worse news is that his best hope of tracking him down is a sleep-deprived Shawn Spencer. summary does not do fic justice. I love this pairing like burning, but damn is it hard to write well. if you maintain the show's tone, it's nigh impossible to convince me that Shawn and Lassiter are going to sleep with each other. (making jokes about it, on the other hand, is canon.) but this! this is like a fully-plotted episode, maintaining the half-deadpan, half-zany humor-with-a-smattering-of-pop-culture-references nature of canon but sneaking low-key hurt/comforty romance hints in there too. unbelievably awesome.

Mind Over Matter, by anonymous (@ st_xi_kink)
(ST:XI, Kirk/Spock, NC-17, ~4,500 words)
prompt: unrequited love - angst with a happy ending my delicious notes for this: uhura? what uhura? = :( but - see kirk pine. see kirk pine nobly. = <3

Oh Doctor Doctor, by softlyforgotten
(P!atD/TYV RPS, Ryan/Brendon, NC-17, ~17,400 words)
It was just that on his first day in the oncology department of the hospital six years ago, he'd been introduced to Dr Ryan Ross, Head Surgeon, and fallen stupidly and irrevocably in love with him, and that, apparently, was that. (A hospital AU.) pining: trope of my heart and soul. true fact: the reason I first liked Ryan Ross was because he was inscrutable enough that I didn't have to suspend disbelief too far in order to believe that someone could be both not-stupid and oblivious about him liking them in a non-humorous situation. I have Confused Feelings about p!atd and rps in the aftermath of the split, but apparently I am a-ok with heart-tuggy AUs.

Still Life, by glitterdemon/jeeps
(ST:XI RPS, Chris/Zach, adult, ~3,400 words)
A relationship in the spotlight. amazing, high-intensity fic in which their relationship is not wholly their own. gorgeously written - details and word-choice are spot-freaking-on. (and I just typed spock-freaking-on, oh god.)

That Monogamy Thing, by silverlining_99
(ST:XI, Kirk/McCoy + McCoy/Chapel, NC-17, ~11,300 words)
for a prompt at st_xi_kink. basically: for once in his life, for bones, kirk sticks to monogamy; but it doesn't even occur to mccoy that kirk would. I would like to be able to write like silverlining_99 when I grow up, please and thank you. clean is the only word that comes to mind for it - writing that comes across as careful but not laboriously so, and sharp, sharp, sharp characterization.

And Know That, by robanybody
(ST:XI, George/Pike, adult, ~4,800 words)
George is not exactly the kind of person Pike would've chosen as a friend. Not that this ever stops George. the author says, "So it turns out that I can only write Pike as a cranky badger and George Kirk as the world's dorkiest fratboy." like that's a BAD thing. *draws sparkly hearts around crankypants Pike*

Calibration, by screamlet
(ST:XI, Kirk/Spock, PG-13, ~9,500 words)
That follow up to A Question of Science I wouldn't think about until it was all I could think about [though it doesn't particularly need that as a lead in, surprise surprise]; in which there is bonding and adjusting. Kiiiiirk omg. Spock is a little less dialectically formal here than I imagine him to be, but Kirk is a beautiful thing of hilarity and insecurity, asjdflk. here, have an amazing quote: "I feel like I'm being watched. He's there, he's watching me, and he's going to be until I die. Watching and evaluating, and judging, and being so fucking arrogant like all Vulcans, and I'd be his little lab rat that he gets to fuck so he doesn't die, and he'll think I'm funny for all the wrong reasons, and when we're in a tight spot and I think of that thing that'll save our lives, he'll see how fucking random it is when I'm smart. He's going to see how stupid I am, how bad my taste in music is, how much I hate museums and diplomats --" so much <3333!

also, if you feel like it? Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really! And I will answer them all in a new post.
