“Janie Evans, you get back here right now!” Quinn yelled as she ran after the small blonde toddler. She was waddling off into the sandbox, not letting her mother finish the French braid she was putting in the little girl’s hair. “Now the braid is gone!” she told her daughter as she gave up.
Quinn would never understand how her two daughters were so extroverted and happy all the time; it must be from Sam’s side of the family. But there they were Emily who was seven and three year old Janie playing with kids they had never met before. It was a little blessed life they led, Quinn a realtor and Sam was working as a elementary school music teacher. Her hours allowed her to be home a lot during the day to take care of the girls.
Quinn was sitting on the bench checking her smart phone for the latest on the housing market and sending emails when Emily came up to her crying. “Em, what’s wrong?” she asked the young girl.
“Mommy, Jake wouldn’t play with me, he said I had cooties! Do I have cooties Mommy?” She asked seriously, tears still brimming in her blue eyes.
“Cooties? Well let me do a cooties check…” Quinn said with a smile. She put a hand on her daughter’s forehead and then asked her to turn around. “Now dance, that’s the last test.”
The blonde shook her little hips as hard as she could and Quinn just laughed. “You are cootie free! Thank goodness, I don’t know what I would do if my child had cooties.”
“But why won’t Jake play with me?”
“Because boys are silly, Emily. You will learn this when you are old like me. They don’t make much sense. So stomp over there and tell him that you are cootie free and that you want to play.”
A determined face took over Emily Evans face, a face that showed just how much she looked like her mother. It was the same face she had when she would storm through the halls of McKinley. Emily walked over and over to the brunette boy that so rudely told her she had cooties.
