"Its Terminator meets My fair lady in this fantastic Debut of Black Magic and Brilliant Ball Gowns. Martial arts and Mysticism"
If that blurb doesn't get your attention I don't know what will Lol
I have been excited about reading this book just because I wanted to read a new twist in the whole Historical time travel plot. I have to say that was been a long time since a book really satisfied me all throughout reading it. Yes there were bit of ups and downs and a few cheesy lines but overall I have to say that I enjoyed this book very much.
So our main Heroine Joan had to travel from the future which is a war zone where humans are fighting against demons and what not have been unleashed upon this world by Reydell with the help of a book. She needs to go back in time to stop Reydell from doing so so that the future is altered for the better. Upon reaching Victorian England, she meets with Simon, our hero. I honestly expected him to freak out when he finds out who Joan is and what she is trying to accomplish especially at how that first meeting went on, I was surprised that Simon didn't panic but instead the author has added a twist into the story that Simon is already familiar with magic and demons due to what Reydell did to his sister. The book shows that more people during that time have been practicing magic and demon summoning but its on the down low meaning it isn't a common practice so that would explain why he had experience in magic. Though I have to say, his reaction when he was performing the first ritual shown to us in the book ... was hilarious and ridiculous but over the course of the book the spells became more interesting as Simon recites them . Personally I would have preferred that the author left him completely clueless about magic and spells just for some laughs but I will give her credit that she did write him well. I liked that the author showed us the progress of Joan's development into London's society and how she should conduct herself to gain the attention of Reydell. I liked that the book showed how was taught her lesson rather than using a time skip where she suddenly knows everything there is to know about being a lady.
I personally loved both Joan's and Simon's characters and how they grew in their relationship. They did feel an attraction to one another but they didn't jump in each others arms and instantly were set as a couple. I felt comfortable with both of the characters on how they had conversations with each other and how they developed their friendship and trust for each other before their romance actually happened.
The action scene/ confrontation was also satisfying to read, I couldn't think of anything that the author would have done better with it to be honest. Maybe Reydell might have died to quickly but that's me nit picking
I have to say that Eleanor, which she was a side character really stood out to me in this book and throughout the course of the book I began to feel her becoming a main character rather than a side character. Basically the book can't be without her, it wouldn't have the same effect without her. I think the author did a wonderful job in her character and I think she was the most developed character in this book. She starts off without having much of a role and is mainly the motivation behind why Simon wants to help Joan take down Reydell but over the course of the book Eleanor grew from a timid, scared and weak girl (which is realistic for her to be this way from what happened to her) to a more confident girl who despite having a few insecurities left in her, was a very smart, useful and an essential character in the book. I also absolutely adore her relationship with Simon I think Eleanor is hands down my favorite character in the book
So with all this covered I will point out that there was something that has been nagging at him even now when I finished the book is the back story to how Simon and Reydell came to know magic and why was there a need for them to be trained in the art? That is a loophole that I think the author should have elaborated on a bit
But despite that, I'm still gonna give this book a 5 since it was so memorable and enjoyable to read. I will defiantly check other books by this author.
