For a few days now I have been thinking about two female characters that I adore, one belonging the newest Disney Princess while the other belonged to the very popular anime Bleach and I noticed how very similar the two are very similar to each other yet one is praised while the other gets a lot of hate. Yes People; I'm talking about Rapunzel and Orihime Inoue.
I just want to state now before any one starts to complain about Bleach being Bleach and Disney being Disney and that I shouldn't compare between the two but here's the thing; I'm gonna compare characterization and throw in the question as to why fans react differently to two similar characters like they two in this case.
The most obvious trait that both of these ladies have in common is their powers. Initially it was thought that Orihime had the power to heal the wounded but later we found out that her powers extend to reversing any object that she concentrates on; including wounds or objects that have been destroyed; pretty much like Rapunzel's power in which she is able to heal wounds as well as reverse time to whatever object it touches; true the only difference is that Orihime's power is in her hair clips that are generated by her own energy while Rapunzel's power is within her genes. Though they are not strong physically; they both possess the power to heal
The Second Similarity that was also noticeable is how realistic these two are. Rapunzel being the more improved Ariel where she does have some insecurities about the world after she leaves her tower and is out on her adventure. Orihime shows similar insecurities within herself which are not necessarily identical to Rapunzel's but never the less; both characters show that they are not perfect and are not fully secure with themselves. Both show that they are normal girls who entered into a situation where they are not sure on how to handle it; they didn't immediately spring into action and started to take on the toughest people heads on
Both ladies show a compassionate heart which is willing to go to any lengths to protect their loved ones; including sacrificing themselves, their freedom and their happiness. Rapunzel was willing to go with Gothel at the price of being allowed to heal Flynn/Eugene while Orihime chose to go to Aizen if it means that her friends would be safe from danger. This is one trait I found that very obviously shows how similar these two characters are.
While these two characters are similar, Rapunzel seemed to have a really good fan base while half of Bleach's fan base criticizes and hates on Orihime. Now my question is why is that? I'm curious to get an answer to this
