Blunt instrument

I wasn't planning to go in to the book room today, but I had gone to the office supply and was halfway there, so I thought I'd stop in and see how the last day of the summer class had gone. I got to check out the posters they had made, which was cool. Then the teacher and I were looking at the old cast-iron paper cutter, which recently had its blade removed so it could be sharpened. I was standing in the wrong place, and (as it turned out) the safety catch hadn't been put back into place, and the handle swung down and bonked me on the head.

I was quite surprised, of course, and stood there for a minute pushing gingerly at my scalp with my hand. "I think I'm ok," I said. "I don't think I'm bleeding." And then, in a complete horror-movie moment, a little trickle of blood made its way out from under my hair and dribbled down my face. Damn.

I went and sat in the office holding a paper towel on it while she went and found some ice. Then the department coordinator walked me up the street to a nearby clinic, where I filled out a vast amount of paperwork one-handed, while attempting to hold the dribbling paper-towel-and-ice on my head. Eventually a doctor came and sponged me off a bit, poked around at the injury, and decided I didn't need stitches. She advised me to keep it clean and dry, and told me to come back on Friday morning so she could check on its progress. I filled out still more papers, and that was that.

I think I'm lucky. Not that being hit on the head is particularly lucky, but on the other hand, it means I get all the drama and excitement of "bleeding scalp wound!" without too many other inconveniences. A bit of a headache, as you'd expect, and it will probably be bruised, but a very minor injury. Thank goodness.

I think this might be a good night to sit still and watch a movie on my computer, and then go to bed early.
