Today I decided to be brave and go inquire about the possibility of doing summer work-study in the book arts lab. There's a huge amount of stuff that could be done, and of course there's not a hope in hell of me doing any of it while school is taking up so much of my time and attention. I thought I might need to write up some kind of proposal, and submit it to people in offices. But it turned out to be impossibly simple: I can just keep on turning in time sheets exactly as I have been all along, and I don't even need to fill out any new paperwork. In fact, they seemed quite happy I had asked. The department apparently has some spare funds that they need to use up somehow.
So I'm all happy about that. It means I'll be able to get a lot of the typefaces in good shape for use in the fall. It means I can probably pay my rent over the summer, and maybe even buy food once in a while. But mainly, it means I'll have access to the equipment, with no particular other demands on my time at all. No homework, no tests to study for, no presentations needing to be thrown together at the last minute.
If I knew which benevolent forces were responsible for this particular break, I'd light candles or something in their honor. Maybe I'll take credit for it myself, and arrange for a small informal celebration, probably involving dead fish and seasoned rice. Huzzah!
