I don't know what feeling better has to do with anything. It never feels good for people to push you around in the first place. So you shouldn't put up with it.

If people are upset, though - they say and do mean things as a way of defending themselves. Reacting to that isn't nice either, it just complicates things. Besides, if you keep being nice to someone, they'll just be nice to you back one day.
