Title: Battle of Who Could Care Less
Author: Anthy (murasaki_plum)
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Type: Angst, Yaoi
Pairing: InuiKai, InuiFuji implied
Rating: PG13
Challenge: Non-song songfic "Selfless, Cold and Composed" by Ben Folds Five
Disclaimer: Prince of Tennis was created by Konomi Takeshi. Not mine at all
Summary: Steps forward, is taken aback, with no clear direction as to where to head next. . .
Notes: Ah~! It's been so long since I've written a drabble, I feel rusty. I'm not sure if I made the pov and time jumps as clear as I wanted to, but I wanted to mainly match the tone of the lyrics. I was also insane in keeping the whole song in there. Yes, and I made a mini-non-songfic of the fic with the title (also a Ben Folds Five song, but fits somehow). Uhm, yeah, I should also note that this drabble is loosely based on the roleplay, though it was written so that it could be put in the PoT universe, unless it squicks you too much then pretend it is solely an RP thing ^^;;. And of course, like all of my timed works, it just ends. Yesh, I am terrible with the angst. Well, enjoy!
Time: 60 minutes even

Practice had been long done, but two figures remained standing in the club room. Neither had bothered with turning on the lights as the sun set. They stared at each other in silence for a moment, all words that the other had to say completed.

I said what you wanted to hear...

"That was what I wanted to say so," Inui concluded, looking at Kaidou by the dimming sunlight that filtered through the windows. I will take it back, he thought silently, noting Kaidou's reaction.

"Are all of the dishes intact?" Kaidou asked finally, his mind filtering back to the incident that solicited this conversation to begin with.

"Let them be broken." the taller boy replied, walking over and turning on the light before the room could get any darker.

"Broken. . ." Kaidou repeated, following Inui with his eyes before looking away. His mind thought bitterly. It's easy to be, easy and free. When it doesn't mean anything. You remain
selfless, cold and composed while I am standing here, battling myself. How long did it take you to plan that speech, an hour? "You've done me no favor to call and be nice telling me I can take anything I like one minute and then yell another. Sempai." he muttered.

"You don't owe me to be so polite " Inui said softly. "You've done no wrong."

You've done no wrong, the words bounced in his mind. Kaidou looked up and snapped back at Inui. "But you have." he laughed. "Many times, apparently. Get out of my sight. I forgive you for yesterday."

"And the day before? The days prior?"

"Those don't matter, do they? I told you I didn't care then."

"Kaidou-"

It's easy to be easy and free, to see whomever you like, be with a willing friend when it doesn't mean anything. To remain selfless, cold and composed in this present situation, however, Inui felt that was impossible. His friend suddenly appeared more than that, and he had grown comfortable with that assumption. For awhile their time together went unnoticed.

However, when Kaidou learned of this, it all changed. Even when it seemed that the other boy had no ties to Inui's heart at all, a simple look of disapproval turned his carefully place logic upside down.

Inui's anger flared, just as it did the night before. Though Kaidou had said he did not care, his actions, his body language told a different story. The boy felt betrayed and rightly so. However, his apathy towards the situation had tortured Inui for weeks.

Come on baby, now throw me a right to the chin. He remembered wanting to yell as he pushed the other boy against the desk, vials and glasses shaking and falling to their feet.

"Sempai-!"

"Don't just stare like you never cared,I know you did!" he had managed to shout before backing away from him. "But you just smile, with that distain, like a bank teller blankly telling me "have a nice life. You may not care, but I do."

He had left before he could see how Kaidou reacted, waiting until today to speak to him. He thought of what he had to say, why they were at a discord to begin with, and how it could be resolved. But even after all that he said, even with that brief snapping, Kaidou returned to his original stance.

"I'm sorry, sempai." he said, turning away to gather his things. "I would like to be left alone right now. I need to train."

Come on baby, now throw me a right to the chin. Just one sign that could show me that you give a shit. But you just smile, politely
and I grow weaker and I-

"I'm sorry, Kaidou."

I said what you wanted to hear and what I wanted to say so, I will take it back.

"No, I apologize, sempai." Kaidou replied. "I should not have said what I did. I still hope we remain friends. You should be happy."

"Kaidou-"

It's easy to be, easy and free when it doesn't mean anything.
And it doesn't mean anything, it's not like Inui really loved him to begin with, right?

"Sempai, I think I would like to increase my training slightly."

"Aa. You can take anything I throw at you." Inui replied, smiling as he gathered his own things. You can take anything I throw, even if it was not meant to be taken.

You're so selfless, cold, even when hurting.

"Send my regards to Fuji, sempai." Kaidou said, picking up his bags, starting the cycle again, the issue unresolved.

"I will." he said, sitting down on the bench to take a few final glances at his notebook. The words on the page seemed to distance himself from the turmoil, from himself. It was calming.

Kaidou looked back at Inui, who by all appearances looked so selfless, cold and unfazed by his confession or apology. Nothing made sense anymore, so he stopped trying.

Both neither realized by their being so selfless, cold and composed, they pushed each other farther away.
