Wow, I'm a little more than a week behind... yikes!
I wanted to mention that last Friday (10 days ago), JAM had an "international" dance party, and we danced to, among other things,
that cool Romanian song (which I randomly heard some guy singing loudly while coming out of Olin Library Wednesday night) and Yatta! It was lots and lots of fun, but I don't really have anything more to say about it.
Hmm... last week was kinda psycho because of the percussion concert. I was practicing a lot, and on Wednesday I played a duet and a solo at Willard Straight, which was cool, even though the second half of the Bach sounded horrible. It's still cool, because even yesterday, people that I didn't realize were there (at WSH) have come up to me and said it sounded good (and they couldn't tell that I messed up on the Bach). And of course, all this was building up to yesterday, which was the percussion concert. It went really well, although we didn't have quite as big a crowd as we usually get, and that was somewhat disappointing. Still, I was happy with all the songs.
Friday night, some people from PCM and I went to see Into the Woods put on by a student-run theater company. The cast did a pretty good job, but the pit could have used a lot more rehearsal. They were frequently off, and had a tendency to play too fast, which is a really bad idea when dealing with Sondheim. The sound was also kind of crummmy, with lines being inaudible at times and mics left on while cast members were offstage (especially distracting when Jack decided to practice "Into the Woods" (the song) during the scene with the Giant (she was hard enough to understand to begin with). Still, it was a good time, and I love the show, so I'm still glad I went.
Saturday night, a former Jammie was having a jazz piano recital, which was really good, especially since he wrote most of the songs. I was quite impressed. I ran straight from that to the World Music Choir concert, which was awesome! They had a guest artist there from South Africa, Sidumo Jacobs, and he was very skilled and energetic... just a joy to see. The ensemble and Mr. Jacobs both encouraged audience participation, so we were singing along and dancing at many moments. Sooo much fun!
Finally, yesterday (as I mentioned) was the percussion ensemble concert. For even more musical fun, I went last night with my friend Sophia to see
Le Vent du Nord, a band from Québec, as part of a weekly folk music series on campus called "Bound for Glory." I'd never gone to one of these concerts before, but it was lots of fun, and there were many many people there, although Sophia and I were almost the only students! It was lots of fun, and I'm definitely going back for more. Kudos to Sophia for inviting me!
Okay, that's about all for now, so... um... bye.
