She is not his to hold.
He has no business doing what he is doing, but she entices him. Yes, those golden curls are what did it, paired with those starry eyes that hold the innocence he can never regain. She is the very epitome of heaven and that is what makes him break the rules; she is a symbol of something he can never have.
He ensnares her before she becomes too feral, too wild for her own good; before she is completely under his brother’s spell, the very same darkness that befell most others who knew him.
It doesn’t take him long to make her fall in love with him: he has done it before and knows the instincts of survival do not blur the desire of touch.
They are like this for a few fortnights: he begins it with pouring her a cup of wine and she ends it with misguided kisses blinded by fever and foolishness. Of course, he encourages it and this cycle quickly transforms itself into an uncontrollable frenzy.
He knows he must let her go when she sputters the name of Samuel in her sleep and wonders aloud where her friend is. When she is finally gone (ran off like a slave from her master), he knows it was foolish if him to think that this could actually work, that this was something more than a temporary arrangement for his own limited self-enjoyment.
Nearly three years later, Ben Linus drives the knife through his heart and as he grasps onto his killer with every second of life he had left in him, his vision clouds and he wonders if Claire would have done the same given the chance.
No, he tells himself just before the flames engulf him. Redemption is still on her side.
