Thunder rumbles overhead, but Jacob ignores it as he strides through the jungle that he knows so well. He reaches a small clearing and comes across someone he rather expected.
Afternoon, Jacob greets the darkly clad man. He is sharpening a knife on his knee, deeply focused in his work.
A little late for a visit, Jacob. I’ve just eaten, so I’m afraid I can’t offer you much refreshment, Esau answers him, but does not look up. His voice is ironic, as if he would even offer Jacob food and water even if he had any.
Jacob nods solemnly and sits down across from Esau, eyeing the blade in his lap. The blade that is meant for him, the blade that will be given to the next pawn in their little game of life and death.
So what are those…People up to nowadays? I heard you were gone for a while.
Who told you? Not that Jacob really cared. He knew that Richardus would rather suffer a thousand deaths than tell this man anything.
The trees. Esau looks up for the first time and stares over at his brother through cynical eyes. Really, Jacob, I’m not senseless. I know when you’re gone, because everything seems a little bit more brighter. A little bit more hopeful, if you will.
Jacob sighs and looks to his feet. Glad to know you feel that way, brother.
You never answered my question, Jacob. How’s life outside of Hell?
Hell. That is Esau’s way of describing his prison that Jacob is intent on keeping him in.
Interesting. There is a new contraption out now. An…automobile, I believe it’s called? It seems it’s something like a carriage powered by electricity. He looks over at an unmoved Esau. But I suppose you wouldn’t know what a carriage is, would you?
And you intend to keep it that way. That isn’t speculation. It is a fact, plain and simple.
You know I do, brother.
Esau sighs and looks up from his work, shaking his head in irritation. In time, Jacob, you will see --
I’ll never be like you. Jacob promptly rises. Storm’s coming, he announces, eying the dangerous-looking sky overhead.
Without notice, Jacob immediately saunters off towards the beach, leaving his brother alone as the sky grows darker with every passing moment.
Wouldn’t be too sure about that, Jacob. Esau ignores the loud thunder as he traces the sharp blade with the tip of his finger. The blade suddenly pricks him and a sliver of red begins to form. After all, we are brothers. Our blood runs deep.
