(no subject)

I'm running into a potential roadblock in my anthro education. Granted, it could be due mainly to the fact that I'm attending surely one of the most far left universities in the US (UC Santa Cruz). But the predominance of Marxist theory is staggering from what I've observed, and I just can't swallow it. I won't waste space going into why, but it just doesn't sit with me, politically, economically, and especially not culturally. I'm registered to go to the AAA meeting in San Jose in November, and while I'm very excited, reviewing the topics just intimidates me more. I'm afraid that it will be very difficult for me to study globalization from anything other than a Marxist framework, or even one that doesn't wholly disparage capitalism and globalization. I'm not one to kowtow to the status quo, but I'm also not interested in being the non-Marxist apologist and oppose a huge community for the rest of my career.

So have I just received a biased view of what theories are predominant in globalization studies and anthropology at large, due to the nature of my school? Who's studying capitalism and globalization from a less...negative viewpoint? I get it, globalization has some horrible effects and capitalism is no panacea. But I need a new voice or perspective or ANYTHING at this point! Help!

globalization, aaa, capitalism, marxism
