Indigenous

Please define the word 'indigenous' for me. This is what I found on the internet that is seemingly relevant.

1. a naturally occurring species
2. natural to a country or region, native.
3. Living or occurring naturally in a specific area or environment; native.
4. native to a particular area.

The continue on like that.

In any case, I only ask because this week is 'indigenous peoples week' on my schools campus, and I am slightly insulted by the implication that I am not 'indigenous.' I was born here, raised here, educated here, and so on and so forth. I've done everything here.

Can someone be more or less indigenous then someone else? Moreover, is it a sliding scale or a black and white scope?

Someone being indigenous to a country seems to be relatively determined by whether you take the single origin hypothesis or the multiple origin hypothesis. If you take the single origin hypothesis then it seems to me that a so-called 'native American' could be no more native than me.

I dunno, just some thoughts.
