Greetings!

I was wondering if anyone could recommend to me some good ethnographical reading.  I'm reading Parallel Worlds by Gottlieb and Graham right now and I'm quite enjoying that.

Thanks!

What genre/theme are you looking for? What kind of ethnographies appeal to you?

It's not a ethnography persay but it was written by a forensic anthropologist. It's called "The Bone Woman" by Clea Koff.

I'm particularly interested in India / South India ethnographies (that's where I hope to carry out fieldwork in the future).

thanks!

i read an interesting ethnography of a gruop in Indonesia in an anthropology of religion class. it's called In the Realm of the Diamond Queen by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing. It's a somewhat dense book by well worth it (plus you don't have to write a paper on it!)

ha! that's on the list of books for my "peoples of the world" class I'm taking now. (so I probably will end up having to write something about it!)
Cool, can't wait to read it.

thanks

I just recently read an ethnographic memoir called "Love and Honor in the Himalayas" by Ernestine McHugh (I think) which I loved. It's about this woman who goes and lives with a Himalayan (Gurung) mountain family for several years (I want to say 5, but I think it's more than that). I thought it was a really good read. It's long to read, but it's captivating. =)

I'm rereading Ilongot Headhunting, 1883-1974: A Study in Society and History by Renato Rosaldo. It's one of my favourites, particularly the touching chapter "Grief and a Headhunter's Rage."

I love Parallel Worlds! That was the first book I read when I was getting into anthropology. I would suggest Nisa - The Life and Words of !Kung Woman and The Mountain People.

I really liked Linda Rabben's 'Brazil's Indians and the Onslaught of Civilization- The Yanomami and the Kayapo', and I'd really like to read Piers Vitebsky's 'The Reindeer People: Living with Animals and Spirits in Siberia', I heard it was really good.
