I was wondering if anyone knows of any anthropologists who have entered the military in order to perform an anthropological analysis of the institution?

That's a tall order. You have to enlist and serve your duration. I was in the military and then afterwards obtained a BA in cultural anth. Don't know if that's what you're lookin' for though.

Yes and no. I mean you would clearly be qualified to do an analysis but a)there are probably some things that you would have picked up on with training that you might not have thought about while there and b) right now i'm actually wondering about published accounts, research and stuff along those lines. I'll prolly head to library and do a quick literature review sometime next week

Seems to me that it would be possible to study the anthropological aspects of the military simply by spending a lot of time with some soldiers. Perhaps something like an embedded reporter?

Depends on what kind of clearance you could get. A reporter might have too much oversight...but it could probably work.

You would need to be a reporter tho... which is an entirely different barrier to entry.

Yes, I have heard of a couple of people who have done that. If you leave your email, I can email you and tell you what I know :)
