Parrots on the Internet

According to some studies, grey parrots can have the intelligence of a 5-6 year old human child and the emotional maturity of a human two-year-old. They can be trained to communicate using meaningful verbal labels, not just "parroting" words as was once thought. However, many parrot owners find it hard to give their pets the attention and mental stimulation they need, and neglected parrots often develop behavior problems like screaming and pulling out their feathers. Now, one group of researchers is working on a "parrot interface" for home computers. With it, parrots left home alone while their owners work could amuse themselves by getting on the internet and operating the mouse with their beaks. If this technology becomes widely available, human/ animal communication will become part of the world community for the first time in history.

There are some interesting possibilities with this. For instance, companion parrots in homes and apartments could be trained to respond to security threats by dialing for help, or even activating safety devices. Of course, if you neglect your parrot, he might just get angry and lock you out of the house.
