PhD/MPH

I'm an undergrad (roughly a junior) who aspires to enter the field of Medical Anthropology and possibly work with the CDC and WHO. So, at the moment I'm majoring in Anthropology and I am about to go to my advisor to talk about getting a minor in Public Health

can't say how long it would take to do a combined but i have a couple friends who got their MPH first and i think that took them 2-3 years. now they're in the PhD program and they're moving along really quickly since they kind of already had their fieldwork planned. i do know florida has a really awesome applied program since that's what it sounds like what you want to do.

Yeah, I just looked at USF and their program looks amazing. Thus far the only schools that I have seen that have the PhD/MPH programs are The University of Pittsburgh, Northwestern, and USF. At the moment, USF looks the most promising.

both of the people i was talking about went to USF and loved it. i have no doubt they would say you should go there.

One thing about USF's applied anth program... they don't require you to do any training in theory. Which sounds good on the outside... but applied anth does use theory and i've talked to a couple of applied anthropologists who won't hire anyone (or at least would have reservations about hiring someone) who doesn't have a background in anthro/soc theory at a grad level.

Just something to think about. That being said, i have heard good things about the program, and your focus on doing a PhD/MPH might change things in that regard. (full disclosure: i was accepted to USF and decided not to go mostly due to cost. Am currently pursing a Master's at another school in applied anth (tho not with a focus in public health))

Though they don't have any theory requirements, they must have some theory courses...right?

That is incorrect. I am a phd student in the dual mph/phd and we have to take theory courses in both PH and Anthro.

I was researching various mph/phd anthro programs and found this. The USF program is good. I would apply if I hadn't done my undergrad and grad (in another program here). Look up Roberta Baer. She is the anthro. programs resident med. anthropologist. Good luck, if this is still your interest.
