Community Tag Update: Part 2

Feb 28, 2008 13:36

Hello again from your friendly community moderators,
Recently members have received an error message when attempting to post to this community with a new tag. The error message states that the new tag would exceed the lj imposed limit of 1000 tags per community. Well, it turns out our community currently has 1420 tags, not 'just' 1000. I do not know how we overshot our limit so thoroughly without receiving the error message earlier, but according to lj support, we did. I imagine it will take several weeks to cull the tags down to less than 1000, allowing new tags to be introduced in the future. In the mean time, please choose your tags from the available list. Don't worry, you have 1420 to choose from as of right now ;)

Myself and others will be going through the tags, deleting unused tags, incorrectly spelled tags, and tags that do not conform to the new Tag Guidelines. Please be patient, this will be a lengthy process, as we will be replacing incorrect tags with appropriate tags from the list.

To find out how you can help,

Every member of our community has the ability to edit and add tags (from the list) to any post, whether it was written by that member or not. Feel free to look over our tags list and assist where you believe it to be necessary. You have the power to remove tags that don't follow the guidelines from a post and replace the incorrect tags with new tags that are descriptive and already in use.

Only moderators can delete tags from the master list, but moderators organize the list of tags by how often they are used, and any tag that is not in use will be deleted, and most tags that are only used once will be deleted. Before we delete a tag from the list, we'll be sure that any post using that tag has other tags listed. I would like for each post to have at least two descriptive tags, and we will retag posts as necessary.

Thanks again to everyone for your active involvement in this great community of Anthropologists (from all walks of life)!
