you're saying because one girl died during a medical procedure, that doesnt mean the medical procedure is still much safer than having it done in an alley without sterile tools and a trained professional? I dont buy it.
it says the death may have been due to the anesthesia, in which case the fact that it was a clitoridectomy (or some other kind of female genital circumcision) is kind of irrelevant.
on a seperate note, one about cultural relativity not about safety, I talked about this with my friend just now and he brought up the fundamentalist mormon communities where they marry off young girls to old polygamist mormon men in the community, and all the terrible things that go along with that. I suppose that is a cultural practice too but I still feel like I can judge that and say that's wrong and I would feel comfortable trying to stop it. I dont feel comfortable going into a place where 97% of women have some form of FGC and where indeed it's women who are often encouraging the practice or hiring doctors to do it, and saying "you're wrong for doing this". i'm still trying to work it all out.

I agree. One only has to draw parallels to abortion and the back alley ways in which that was and still is performed today in countries where there is no legal right to it, or where for social reasons, a woman cannot afford it.

While I don't agree with the practice and am glad Egypt has banned it - I don't agree with circumcision period unless it is the choice of the owner of the organ being circumcised - I'm not naive enough to believe that things aren't going to get worse for women before they get better.

No. I'm just saying it's still not safe.
