A brief question: Does anyone have any hints on teaching the concepts behind gender in an introductory cult. anth course? I ask because during the section on kinship and marriage, I had a student burst out (during the discussion of marriage exchange theory) with "You women just got your rights, you should not be going on about them. Be greatful. This is why you'll never get anywhere."
Is it common experience, especially for younger female adjuncts, to encounter hostility when discussing gender stratification, marriage, and the roles of women and men? How do you handle it without seeming to be confrontational or angry?
