The very first thing I bought in the UK that wasn't a train ticket was a bottle of Panda Pop Orangeade. I sat in Highgate, drinking my pop, and watched my first London blackcab go past, closely followed by a red double decker bus. I distinctly remember the feeling of the moment, mouth full of fizzy artificial orange, fuzzy headed from jet lag, pleasantly warm in the late August sun, and thinking "I'm really here, I'm really here!" Some how I had set foot on a film set, stepped through the TV screen, and everything had smell and touch and taste. The smell of orange pop can still take me right back to that moment, and that sense of exhilaration and adventure.
Hmmm, need to drink tea before talking about it, I think.
