Today the bagpipes I bought arrived. They look great, and from what I can tell, sound good too. Am definitely going to need lessons, though - and gosh, gee, I'm going up to herald the SCA demo at the Mount Barker Highland Gathering on Saturday. If I can't find a teacher there, I'd better buy a map to my arse.
And no, get all those thoughts of tartan and plaid out of your mind, and expunge any thoughts of Braveheart and Rob Roy. They aren't Scottish Great Pipes, they are based on an italian medieval design. Key of A (I believe), with 2 drones, one tenor and one bass. My only concern with getting lessons is that most of the ones I've found on-line are based around the various Pipe Bands, and while the theory will work just fine, mine are not in the same key at all, and won't work in a group class. I'm going to be pushing finances for classes; I don't think I can afford to hire a different set of pipes as well.
But I'm sure all will go well. Before you get to all the neighbour jokes, I have a reasonably sound-proofed cellar, and I'm a short walk from an enormous park which has hosted more than a few pipers practicing in the past.
