hurricane charley just touched down in orlando. yesterday it was a category one. school was canceled and the governor declared a state of emergency. it's now about to become a category five and it's veering northeast. the eye is aimed straight for us. mayor buddy dyer is flipping out. hasn't seen anything like this since he was four years old -- forty years ago. trees will be down, he says.
yesterday during mild hurricane bonnie we turned the house into a fortress. nothing in the backyard except for patio furniture in the pool. then we swam in the torrential rain with all of it. i went to the apartment and took care of everything there. most of my valuables are in the closets. came back here at 4am and got a good night's sleep. there was that eerie peacefulness that normally precedes disaster.
la casa is now disaster headquarters. everyone was in the pool as newschannel 13 broadcasted skyscraper shots of the hurricane approaching downtown and showed viewer-submitted photos of funnel clouds. just as the electricity went out, i emailed them pictures of hans in the pool with the first arms of the storm in the background.
the power finally came back on. there's no telling how long it'll last. the neighbors clearly have never been in a hurricane. they're tying a basketball hoop and a wheelbarrel to power lines poles using fishing line. maybe it's 200lb test. i don't know. seems like the same type of logic people use when they hold onto a belt tied to machinery in the center of a tornado.
the other neighbors haven't touched the two tons of metal garbage and boats in their backyard.
todd wants to play poker for food. we'll probably do that by candlelight all night until it's time to draw straws.
