Cell phones and Restroom - Finally a non-sports post
Okay ladies and gents, I know that its the day after the completion of the NFL draft and I said I would comment on it, but I don't feel like it. Instead I'm going to ask you all about something that I just don't get. This is something that I especially find weird.
What is the etiquette for someone on a cell phone while in the restroom? I mean there have been several times this year where I've been going about my business in there and I see someone enter while talking on their cell phone. To me this just seems like something that is rude and is bound to lead to problems. Think about it. You are in the bathroom and you hear someone asking a bunch of questions from one of the stalls. You assume that they are talking to whoever entered or that they had seen you coming or entered just after you. So you respond a few times. Then you never hear them respond to you. Finally you realize that the person is on the phone and you feel like an ass cause you've been responding. Or you are the person on the other end. How would you feel if you found out that someone had pulled this on you?
I only have been thinking about this because of some random events that have happened in my dorm. There is one person that I am convinced never makes a phone call unless he is in the restroom. Before a few weeks ago I had thought that this kid had just wandered in to use the facilities when he happened to be on the phone. I soon learned that this wasn't the case. He actually makes the call as he is entering the restroom and then seems to wait to start the process until he is on the phone. Now to me this is plain rude and there are several reasons not to do it.
1. What happens if someone just happens to be rather loud while you are in there on the phone?
2. I would worry about getting found out. I mean this seems like something you would do to someone you feel like spiting. Otherwise its just rude.
3. Dropping the phone. As someone who once had this happen while having the phone in my pocket, I would fear it slipping out of hand and into the toilet or after finished with the call falling in later. This is why I try at all costs never to bring a phone into a restroom.
This has only been on my mind because as I came back to my room from class this afternoon, there he was in the restroom on the phone again. To me this practice seems odd, but that's just my humble opinion.
