Adventures with fangirls, part the sixth
So today was the climax (so to speak ;) of the fangirls adventures in Glasgow! We had planned to go and visit the Clyde's resident tall ship the beautiful Glenlee and to view Archie's bell but sadly the ship is closed for refurbishment right now.
However nodbear and I started the day in fine style by visiting the special collections at Glasgow University Library to view pamphlet written by Admiral Lord Exmouth in 1816 describing the topography of Tunis and Algiers and the bombardment of the latter. We got rather overexcited by Sir Edward's elegant prose and got officially shushed by the librarian who asked us to keep out voices down as we were disturbing the other readers. There was one other reader in the room who was tapping away loudly on her laptop. We did lower our voices but had difficulty stifling the giggles.
On leaving the library we discovered they had a book sale where we picked up Queer Sites: gay urban histories since 1600, the catalogue of the Lady Lever Art Gallery and The Eighteenth Century Background: studies on the idea of nature in the thought of the period. After a walk round the cloisters of Glasgow University where I showed nodbear the turret where I used to work (yes I worked in an archaeology lab at the top of a turret for five years in the nineties) we rendezvoused with esmerelda_t for lunch. The rest of the afternoon went something like this: cafe, bookshop, bar, bookshop, restaurant. By the time we stopped for dinner we had amassed quite a spectacular haul of vintage books:

We were highly entertained by the owner of one book shops who commented "So are you all into this navy stuff then? That's unusual for women to be into that kind of thing." I may have said something about cute navyboys in nice uniforms in reply...
We are now back home ensconced on the couch and I am dosing nodbear's pyrexia with a hot toddy that Mr Cookworthy would be proud of!
