I can't figure out why I'm not more interested in Giles/Ethan. It may be because the pairing is nearly canonical, or it may be something very personal. Giles and Ethan are actually about my older sister's age, and reading about their misspent youth might be too much like reading about *her* misspent youth, except that I don't think my sister summoned any demons.
I don't think....
It's not because I don't think the chemistry's there or because I scorn Robin Sachs. He could look like Quasimodo as long as he had the same voice, rrowr.
Have you read any Giles/Ethan that worked for you? Are there any elements to the fanon, maybe, that put you off? The pairing is a bit out of fashion at the moment-- was supplanted by G/Wes, which in turn fell out of favor for G/Xander, if I am reading the fossil record correctly-- but while it was in fashion there were some common threads.
I have a sense that a lot of people writing G/E are trying to recreate a time period during which they themselves were having a very different experience. I'm your age; when Giles and Ethan were doing rock drugs and sex magic, I was in elementary school. My memory of the '70s is vastly different than theirs, as if we lived in completely different eras. It might be easier for me to grasp the fictionalized between-the-wars England of the Wimsey novels than to grasp the much nearer England of the 1970s. And when it comes to their sexual relationship, they were among the last people to make it like minks without the shadow of AIDS hanging over them, whereas people my age were among the first never to be without it.
I think I liked "Breaking Glass" because it had none of the cliches; it wasn't simply a knock-off of Velvet Goldmine, it had the magic and the danger in the G/E relationship exactly where it should be.
If I make no sense here, it's because I just had a large dinner with friends and wine. {
A ficspam at the end of the month and an autumn of Giles/Ethan - now that sounds like the perfect way to spend my September when the kids are back in school. :D
I can absolutely work that in. It would follow nicely from the discussion they have about whether Buffy is drunk enough that she can't feel her lips when she's kissed. (I find The Pink Panther inspirational in many ways.)

Maybe it's because at that point in the tale it's been way too damn long since either one had a good laugh or got laid.
Of course, the fact that Giles is even more adorable when he giggles (even drunkenly) than the rest of the time could be contributing to it.
Would it be too much to ask that Buffy laugh so hard she snorts at some point? Oddly, I find that image endearing.
