The other day I went to work and came back with 3 glorious unread books, all mine to keep for free. In my mind, nothing can really compare to well-designed paperbacks with intriguing back blurbs, and the fact that they were free just sealed the deal. It was like Christmas.

The magazine I work for gets a lot of unsolicited review copies sent by publishers, so they mostly pile up on a shelf in the office and make me salivate while I'm opening mail. Usually we can borrow them to read, and the editor calls a book barn to cart them away. This time, though, the book barn didn't want any of them, so the books have been languishing away all summer and the editor is trying desperately to get anyone to take as many as possible. Hence my little indulgence.

Things like this make me feel greedy, lucky, and like the little assistant scrambling in a New York publishing house that I used to wish I could be, all at the same time.
