Car Talk: Stupid Milestone

I had been dreading this for at least a couple of months, but on Thursday night I successfully parallel parked the Batmobile. It only took two tries, and for a car that is fully seventeen feet long where you can't see either the nose or tail from the driver's seat, I feel two was a good number. Boo-ya for me!

I never even knew how to parallel park until I moved to Maryland. In Oklahoma there just isn't any -- land is so cheap that everyone has a huge driveway and all the businesses have parking lots that go forever.

This sounds, not surprisingly, like it was in most of Texas when I was growing up. These days, the only time I have to Parallel park is when I go into DC, and parking down there is always a freaking nightmare.

Since I live in the city, I find myself parallel parking a lot, at least when I go somewhere that I can't walk to. I'm pretty good at it at this point, although when I moved here originally it took me 15 minutes of backing and filling. When I took my driver's ed test the tester asked me to parallel park and I just said "I can't," he marked it down and that was it. I passed anyway -- they didn't place much of a premium on it out there.

I actually failed my first driver's test at the parallel parking point. I had successfully completed parking when the MVA drone giving the test told me to head to the left, which I immediately did...causing me to drive over the parallel parking target lines. The fucker failed me right on the spot and I had to wait two weeks before I could take the test again.
