the ice-up looks like it's here to stay. some cracks and patches (like the dark spots off to the left) still appear but we haven't seen real open water for a few days now.
(it's been wonderful to have the ice clear out during my last two seasons. that didn't happen during my early Mactown summers, 2001-2004, because there was a large iceberg (i.e. about the size of Connecticut) hung up near the mouth of the sound that prevented the winds & currents from doing their usual work. it just feels better when there's open water around the station. probably because our house is right on the water at home too. but I won't have long to miss it here since -- WOOT! -- my flight is scheduled for Friday.)
