I remember writing an entry about the last nice day of the year... well, today was the first nice day of the year, and it was just fantastic. I went for a walk just as it started to get dark, which is when it gets really freezing even on nicer days this time of year (as far as I can tell) but it was just absurdly warm. This is what I imagine April must be like. The wind was pretty strong, which it always is when you're right by the lake, but it was great. I couldn't believe it was January - certainly not after all the horror stories people have told me about how cold and miserable January is. This was perfect.
After a while I felt stupid wearing my huge coat and I just took it off and walked home with just a scarf on over my shirt. I expected to be freezing when I did that, but I really wasn't. It's just such a beautiful time of day, too, when it's a bit dark but the streetlights haven't come on yet, and you can't see everything quite as clearly. The sky looked amazing, too, and I felt so liberated not being wrapped in that huge bulky jacket. Of course I've got a ton of work to do and way too much to worry about these days, but I couldn't have cared less because it wasn't cold and when it's not cold, then all is well in the world (with the possible exception of global warming).
Well, there was freezing rain yesterday and tomorrow it's supposed to be around -15. As much as I'd love for it to be like this all the time, that doesn't seem very likely. I've enjoyed my break from winter, but I'd better not get used to it.
