I like the choices you've made in this story, all the sad, subtle ways this world differs from the one we know. The ending is kind of heartbreaking, in a good way; I really love that last line.
Oh wow. The ending is rather heartbreaking in that everyone forgot Sai--and by extension Hikaru as well--and Sai never did get the game he wanted with Touya Kouyou, did he? D: Little things made me sad--how Sai and Hikaru weren't nearly as close this time, how everything Hikaru did seemed like an extension of Sai to everyone else, how much Hikaru struggled for his own recognition. I really liked reading this though. It was great seeing how different Hikaru's world can be, and yet how things always remain the same. <3
This was a very inspired retelling. It's obvious you put a lot of thought into how the series would have been altered if Sai were a real human. In particular, Hikaru's emotions, and conflicting feelings about Sai and Akira are touching and realistic. (Sai's presence *is* more obtrusive, he is overshadowing Hikaru and affecting the relationship with Akira).
It's also interesting how you worked in the "Sai disappearing" angle. Something's wrong, the passion starts to fade, and he still disappears.
The ending was effective as well. Excellent contrast to the first time in canon Hikaru plays Akira, and Hikaru's motivation.
