So why should it matter?
Why is
Zachary Quinto finally admitting he's gay making me happier than I've been all weekend?
It's not like I didn't know. It's not like anybody in the Western hemisphere who follows LGBTQ blogs didn't know. The man is so gay rainbows come out of his fingertips when he waves his hands around while talking (yes. I'm being stereotypical. But it's also tru fax, you know that I'm right.) And why should the coming out of a celebrity be anything more than a few drops in a sea of intolerance and despair? In this world where hate crime legislation is plastered over in the screech for marriage equality. It's 3 days after the anniversary of the day Matthew Shepard was tied with barbedwire to a fence while the murders of thousands of LGBT kids (particularly those of color) go unreported and we go unscandalized. 30 year old legislation keeps discrimination legalized in the workplace and V-shaped bruises on 13 year old necks finally make headlines 10 years after teen suicides became relevant in this country. Does it really matter that one celebrity comes out? One which, quite frankly, we all knew was gay?
Maybe not that much. But maybe every little step counts.
In the words of Harvey Milk: "People vote two for one for us when they know they know one of us."
) Life is too short not to live it with authenticity and honesty. Whether or not Quinto's coming out does "all that good," if it makes him feel better, I'm happy for him. Congratulations, Zach! As a fellow queer, I'm happy to claim him as part of the big gay family<3
And I get to call my roommate from last year and be like "OMFG I TOTALLY TOLD YOU SO" but whatever.
