The Girl in the Corner: A Jailhouse Journal Pt 3

26 SundayIt was after 1 when I went to sleep last night. That was after going to bed a little after 11. And today, we've all been on lockdown. No one has left their cells, and they haven't had the tv in the common room on. I just thought that was how they did Sundays around here. But one of the other inmates asked the guard what was up, and he said ( Read more... )

I like your account of your time 'in't clink' because it's honest, and very infomrative. But still, I sincerely hope you never, ever, ever have to go through that again! How's the car doing, been anywhere groovy of late?

As for HAL, I don't know where to start. It's obvious I need a new HDD, but not one that will conk out in the two years it will take me to get things to the way I like! I have backed up, cleaned, swiped, scanned like a good girl but still the bloody thing crashed, so I guess I'm feeling kinda betrayed. At the moment, I'm searching through a minefield of sites trying to find a free/shareware data recovery proggy that I hope can get back the last few photos and mp3's that I had *cough* downloaded, and again, I don't know where to start.

I need to get the dvdwr proggys back in HAL, so that I can do this (I'm hoping that I can save the files directly on to a dvd rom from HAL, 'cos there ain't no way they're going to be saved on to HAL's present HDD again.) But again, do I copy a proggy on the CD on this lappy and use that for HAL's recovery, or get HAL back on line and do so 'drekly' as we say in Cornwall. I don't particulary want to start taking piles of time plonking stuff back on to HAL's HDD when he's going to be getting a heart transplant very soon. I guess this is all a bit daunting, so I am procrastinating a bit :(.

Anyway, at least I can stay on line with my laptop!

*Hugs*

Heh. I'm hijacking my own thread. :p Anyway, that live disk is prolly your best bet; after that there's a disk floating out around there called "Tech Tools" that might help, too. But since you've reformatted that drive, you don't want to use it too much, because right now there's a risk of overwriting everything you're trying to save. Good luck!

As for honesty---that's something I'm trying hard for too. It's yet another reason I'm trying hard not to edit what I wrote. Some of it's embarrassing, some is moody, some is just...well, it leaves me kind of open. I'm having issues with that the last few years. :)

And the drama continues! I ran the proggy I have on the deep, deep, deep, deep, deep and even deeper scan thingy, which took about 5 hours. It picked up 8 partitions, but seemingly, it's not a case of just opening up the files/folders to see what's in 'em but a bunch of other technical stuff must be involved as well. The file names are in symbols so I think I'll leave that bit to Geoff, The PC ghod to sort out!
