I've never read Joan Aiken before. Since apparently everybody in the universe except me has read The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, nearly all of them back when they were a good 20 years younger than I am now, I feel just the tiniest bit silly. But her opening lines didn't appeal to me when I was a kid, so I put the books back on the library shelves. Now I am, for the second time this winter, feeling the joy of discovering a new and rightly beloved author. I'm now alternating Aiken and Heyer books. It's been one heck of a season, and I'm reading more and faster than I have for years, maybe even since I was a student. As a writer it's also a great pleasure to sit at the feet of two new teachers.
