Don't Mess with Mother Nature

Yes, we had an earthquake. A 5.2 magnitude earthquake. It woke me up out of a dead sleep. No, I didn't think it was a train or truck going by or anything like that. This isn't the first one I've felt, even here in Indiana. It lasted almost 45 seconds, which is quite a long time for a shaker like this.

It seems to have been felt over quite a wide area as well. The USGS reports indicate it was centered near West Salem, Illinois, about 40 miles NNW of my house. There have been aftershocks to the west of here, but I haven't felt any. Everyone is fine in the household. We have not found any damage. The gas lines in the basement seem fine (We'll check again in daylight). Nothing fell over, even.

I am only still awake because other folks are making a deal out of this; we've gotten the obligatory "are you ok" phone call, within minutes. And now the news is on repetitive loop with the same info over and over again, saying how significant this was...

*shrug* Just a friendly reminder that we live on the northern end of the New Madrid fault complex. I just want to slink back to bed and try to get some more sleep.

And just to note: our cats did not wake us up. They apparently were hiding during the event. So much for fuzzy love! They came out for laptime after it was over.
