The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
- Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
by Robert Frost
Left home Monday for a round-trip road-trip.
Tomas and I left only a little later than planned, which is a pleasant surprise. We headed down to Triune, Tennessee, to set up for
TennRen. We're in our usual spot by the joust field. Of course, Tomas had to forget a thing or two, but I've come to the conclusion that is normal. We were done by 4pm Central Time. Only a couple hours later than he thought.
From there we needed to head north to pick up a trailor Tomas bought in Michigan. But I knew very well that we weren't gonna make it there in anything resembling decent time. So I drove us to Toledo (much to his discomfit, I think) where I had made previous arrangements to crash with my sister. Thanks sis! Tomas seemed to be under the unrealistic idea that we could make this all in one big 20-hour marathon round. As if! We hit Toledo about 2am Eastern time. Tomas didn't realize that Michigan and Ohio are on Eastern, making it even later there than he thought.
After the enthusiastic greeting of Max and Sebastian, we got some shut-eye. In the morning, since we were here and not on a specific time schedule, I offered to take Tomas to the
Toledo Museum of Art and show him some of the items I had previously only had photos of. I especially wanted him to see the leaf-crowns they have on display. We got there before they opened (*gasp*) so I called up my dad and met him for breakfast. Then we went back and browsed.
From there we actually headed into Michigan. I had to navigate by the seat of my pants, since Tomas had only printed mapquest directions to get there from Indiana, and also forgot to put his atlas in the truck. I managed to get there, a little town just NE of Lansing. The trailor was parked in a muddy yard full of other camping/hunting/fishing stuff. It took a bit to get it out of the mud.
From there it was homeward bound. When we hit the Indiana-Michigan state line, I was tired. Up until that point I'd done ALL the driving. So I tossed him his keys, and hoped to take a nap. Ha! That man is a terrible driver. From there to Indy, he almost hit somebody twice. We did pass through a brief rainstorm with some light hail during the first incident, but the second was clear sky. At Indy, I took over again, tired or not. We finally got home around midnight local time. Whew!
Got home to discover that Mark got the house we'd been looking at. Offer and counteroffer. Now its down to paperwork. So I guess we'll be moving in a couple months! More to do...
But anyway, the whole thing was about 1305 miles, which brings the yearly total to 3455, and my 'season' doesn't officially start until tomorrow, when we leave for opening weekend at TennRen! I think my butt is the shape of the driver seat already...
