Illogically, Iowa makes him think of Vulcan. There's no basis for it. The temperature, like all of Earth, is a few degrees too cool; the land too flat; the sun just barely too yellow-bright. Even the dust that blows up around his feet is different, more soil than ground metallic rock and consequently lacking the faint taste of iron where it curls up high enough for him to breathe in and taste. There's nothing in Iowa for him but Jim, and even that is sometimes an assertion with questionable proof, and yet. There is still something, just enough of the dust and the sunlight and the summer heat and way the expanse of the sky forms a sharp contrast against a ground that is all dirt, scrub-grass, and no water. In all of Iowa, and for reasons he barely knows and won't ever be able to justify, there is something that makes a portion of Spock ache--not for missing Vulcan, but for the fact that Jim will never have the chance to see Spock's home and be reminded, however illogically, of his own.

Sorry for the delay on this one! I had to think about how best to approach your prompts, which both sent me in about six different directions all at once. I think I like this one the best, though; I hope you enjoy it, too!

N'awww, don't worry about being late, I realise my prompts were, um, a bit random. XD I love what you did with the ST 'Iowa' prompt! Really evocative and lovely to read, even in such a short piece - such a lovely way with words, bb! And pardon me while I MELT with girly abandon at Spock's love for Jim. *flails* Well done you!
