I love the summer.
Besides the warm caress of the sun, I always have you to greet me in the morning with those sleepy eyes and soft hands, pulling yourself up to dangle over my lips and giving me kiss after breathless kiss. The kisses that let me know it will be a good day.
I have you during those lazy mornings. I have you during those even lazier afternoons.
And then those languid evenings.
I have you all to myself. Every last piece. The give is wonderful. And I take it.
I tell you I’m in love with this summer, but you know it’s more.
It’s these summers. It’s this. It’s everything.
You.
And the smile you give me is the sweetest pain when you walk away, back to autumn, back to winter, back to spring, back to a life that doesn’t include me, leaving me inside a summer I can only keep alive inside my memories.
The give is heartbreaking. And you take it.
I tell myself not to look forward, but I know I won’t listen.
So for now, I’ll pretend the sun’s rays are those soft hands. The stars winking, those sleepy eyes.
