1. In the story "The Boat", the narrator seems to be observing his family's struggle with tradition and finding a better life. His mother wants her children to keep to the small town and live life the way she does, and his father and sisters all strive to see more than just the small town and limited knowledge their mother is satisfied with. This is evident when the mother expresses her disapproval of books, working at the restaurant which was not run by or for "their people", and when she does not accept gives or money made by these means. The narrator himself has a hard time chosing which path he wants for himself, being that his father needs the help on the boat and it would appease his mother, or wanting a better life, wanting to study, and having his father encourage  him to do so.

-noun
fiction that discusses, describes, or analyzes a work of fiction or the conventions of fiction.

An example of a metafictional movie might be the "Scary Movie" films, where the characters all portray other characters and scenes from cheesy horror films, and add a humorous twist.
