Agreed. Pedophilia is downright wrong and the child, no matter how one looks at it, is more often than not always the victim of it.
Children exploring what makes them feel good, however, is not. I actually have been thinking about it for a while. Taking Mello and Near in regards, they would totally want to do that. Number one being they're curious. What little genius prodigies aren't? Number two being it's a normal stage of life where hormones can rage like hell and it can turn out to be a good thing. Adolescents should be able to explore what makes them feel good. It's perfectly normal. (Dude, I'm still kinda a teen, so I can vouch for you).
As far as being turned on by the stories, well... I'm actually not sure what to say on that matter. To be honest, I do get a little bothered (just a smidge) when it comes to well-done erotica stories. But since I'm a writer and since you're a writer as well, we both (I believe), look for the qualities in the writing that make it so good. Whether the reaction is being turned or not is another issue. I mostly read for the sake of reading good writing. It just happens that some of what I read is a little... mature.
Personally, it would only be akin to child porn if, in fact, you were going out and doing it with real children, ya know, manipulating them to your fic story lines. That's a WHOLE OTHER ISSUE ENTIRELY and, of course, completely wrong. Not only is that kidnapping, but serious charges ensue... not good.
In short, really, I don't think fics of children exploring what makes them feel good are bad fics. I mean, I've seen quite a few badly written ones and I could prolly point those out, but I mean... how should I say this without sounding hypocritical? Children are children, teens are teens. They're going to be somewhat rebellious to piety of everything, teens especially. It's part of the adolescent phase when hormones begin a party inside the body and exploring how those work on instinct isn't a bad thing. I consider it a perfectly healthy kind of move.
I guess it boils down to what you choose to do. I think upping their age would take away some of the true raw quality of the writing, but it's your choice. If you want to please more readers, then do that. If you want to write for yourself and write what you feel like, then write them with whatever age you had them.
