I left before sunrise to begin my journey to work. I traveled first by train, then bus, subway. and then by foot. I walked through neighborhoods where years previously I would have feared to tread. The young men are on corners, ball caps pulled low covering watchful eyes. Children playing on sidewalks passing in front of the old men in chairs with their bottles. I am shadowed by the nights laundry as it sways gently in the breeze on lines strung between buildings. I arrive at the warehouse. Unknown I climb to the roof in the afternoon to smoke. I take in the view of buildings and people, a collection of, abandonment, struggle, decay, vibrancy and life. Far of in the distance the statue of liberty raises her torch of welcome to the poor, the hungry, the lost.
