It was bad enough she had now been in this strange city for a week without much to eat and without much of a permanent place to live (the hostel was getting downright aggravating, and she could only illusion herself to look younger for so long before draining her body's resources) - now it was raining. The kind of rain where the sky opens and the heavens boom and crackle and everyone gets well and thoroughly wet.
Reminiscent of home, the woman, clad in a black trenchcoat with a hood, muses. She rounds the bend, not really watching where she was going. Her toes scrape the side of a tin trashcan lid and she stumbles a few steps, pausing to regain her footing, cursing loudly.
"Stupid messy idiots," she says to herself. "Leaving rubbish bins in the middle of a road...."
Pika, meanwhile, let out a piercing shriek as her shelter came down on top of her. The tiny kitten immediatly tried tto get up, jumping and pushing at the lid, causing it to jump up and scuttle, unti finally the kitten curled into a tiny, quivering ball and cried, eyes shut tight and tiny body trembling.
She was cold, wet, hurt, alone, and now her only shelter had fallen on her and was slowly filling with water.
Pika shivered and looked up, mewing, then slowly leaning to snff the finger before crawling over on her belly, mewing continually and reaching out for comfort and protection.

"Well now," she says, looking down at the small kitten. "How'd you end up out here?" She reached a finger toward the scared animal and waited.
