a life in the day of a. #16

during the walk home after the movie, samantha did most of the talking. alyosha would occasionally offer a comment or opinion on whatever topic she had jumped to, but he was generally content in allowing her to control the conversation.
upon coming up to his building, alyosha became aware of the hour and the fact that she had much further to go in order to get to her own home.

a. "sam, it's pretty late. why don't you...come up, you can stay here. not...together! i mean, i have a couch, and it would save you -"
s. "alex, alex. settle down, i know what you mean. and thank you, you're a gentleman. it would save me a lot of hassle."

alex? he frowned at himself while opening the front door.

.....

a. "if you could be any time signature, which would you be?"
samantha raised her eyebrows ever so slightly before answering:
s. "3/4 time. yeah, i would definitely be a waltz"

they sat lazily on his couch far into the early morning, alternating between silly discussions such as the one above, and more thoughtful conversations. rich, comfortable silences punctuated each change of tone.
it was during one of these silences that alyosha yawned, suddenly becoming aware of the time and just how exhausted he was. he was about to offer her his bed when he turned and found that she had fallen asleep on his shoulder. he decided it would be silly to wake her just to be chivalrous. he managed to inch out from underneath her without waking her, replacing his shoulder with a pillow. he paused as she mumbled in her sleep, suddenly terrified to wake her, but she was just adjusting herself. he threw a blanket over her before heading off to bed himself.
alyosha slept uncharacteristically well that night.
