26 - 50: The list continues

26. Driving with Mark along Route 17 on an August evening - the moon was rising over the mountains and the air smelled of redwoods and felt like warm velvet.

27. Drinking jasmine tea and soaking at The Tea House.

28. A silhouette by the window, the city glittering and chaotic beneath him.

29. Bourbon Street, New Year’s Eve - my girlfriends and I buy very large, very fancy Mardi Gras beads to wear for the evening festivities. We spend the rest of the night fielding, “What did you do to get beads like those?” with only a wink and a smile.

30. Laying on the lawn in our pajamas outside my dorm watching the sun rise.

31. Running across the quad with friends in the rain - shrieking and laughing whenever it started to thunder. “No no no! Stay away lightning!”

32. A hot shower and a heavy, ripe mango.

33. 12:01am January 1, 2000 - Champagne and laughter with friends

34. Sitting on the back porch, watching the ocean fog roll in at 3am - the seals are barking down by the Boardwalk.

35. Singing with my dad in the car.

36. It’s summer and I am 13. We are laying on the roof and talking quietly, we pause to watch the bats circle out into the night to feed and I feel a sudden jolt as his fingers touch mine.

37. Laughing and dizzy as my dad spins me around - I feel safe and awed at his strong hands around my arms as he lifts me with ease.

38. Swing dancing with my sister.

39. The first weekend at college and the realization that I am completely on my own and am responsible for my own decisions - it is exhilarating and terrifying.

40. My first morning on the Playa at Black Rock - the sun pours into our tent, warming and waking us. The quiet is blissful.

41. Watching a group of cats play and romp in the orchard behind Mark’s apartment. The entire weekend was laced with the scent of apples.

42. Roses from Scotland.

43. Nearly fainting when opening the envelope and realizing it was an acceptance letter to college. My dad cried as he read it aloud.

44. My Surprise Sweet 16 birthday party.

45. Golden Gate Bridge at midnight.

46. Poi and lomi salmon on N. Judah.

47. 4am Hot chocolate and beignets at Cafe Du Monde

48. Hula lessons with Mom in our little camper.

49. Fishing for blue crabs in the river with cheese tied with string.

50. Drinking champagne from the bottle and tripping drunkenly over our feet as we walk along the Mississippi - slurring “Auld Lang Syne” in 3-part harmony.

Recurring themes: driving/travel and being awake at 3am. Ah, insomnia!
